In 1952 I served as the national meeting chairman. John Haefner: Well, I'll start with the annual meeting. What kinds of times were those? What was the social-political context for social studies education then? You wrote the preface to the 1953 yearbook, a book on the teaching of social studies skills, which you referred to as citizenship skills, such as gathering and evaluating information, communicating, and critical thinking. In 1952 you were elected president of NCSS and served as the presiding officer throughout 1953. Mary Hepburn: John Haefner, I would like to obtain your perspective on social studies education over the years since you served as president of National Council for the Social Studies. Hepburn is professor of social science education and head of the Citizen Education Division at the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia, Athens. The interview was conducted for Social Education by Mary Hepburn in November 1994. In this interview, he shares his reflections on social studies education then and now, and on the constant challenges facing NCSS. John Haefner was NCSS President over 40 years ago, in 1953-farther back in time than any other current NCSS member who has served as President. ![]()

Grenouille spends his childhood learning all the different smells in the world and their names. He can smell people and places and things to a degree that no human ever could, and this ability is at the center of his life’s obsession. He can smell what’s behind cabinets and walls - not just obvious things like fragrance materials, but things like money, too. He can smell a specific person - or their absence - somewhere in a city while standing outside its gates. Ironically enough for someone who smells nothing, Grenouille is obsessed with scent, and his sense of smell is incredible. This guy goes without bathing for years and he simply doesn’t smell like anything. Not as a baby, not as a child, not as a teen nor as a man. ![]() He has abilities beyond what’s possible for a human.Īnd, most notably: Grenouille doesn’t have a smell. Without principles we would be forced to react to all the things life throws at us individually, as if we were experiencing each of them for the first time. Principles are fundamental truths that serve as the foundations for behavior that gets you what you want out of life. I chose to review the part ‘Life Principles’ here. Rincewind doesn't seem quite the hopeless dolt he appears to be in Sourcery he has his moments of self-assurance, particularly when he defies Death. ![]() ![]() The Color of Magic - which is, in Pratchett's world, "octarine," the eighth color of the spectrum - introduces us to Rincewind, the most inept wizard ever to flunk out of Unseen University. It will give you a feel for how Pratchett matures as a humorist and storyteller over subsequent books. His humor isn't quite as madcap as it is in later entires in the series, and there is an episodic structure to the storyline, but it remains the book you might just as well read first if you're going to read any of the Discworlds at all. This, the very first of Pratchett's Discworld yarns, still holds up well today. ![]() 5/27/2023 0 Comments Elsewhere zevin![]() ![]() "Definitely a different take on the events after one dies. Lord knows there aren’t a lot of Fourth of July children’s books to put on display (as I mentioned). Nostalgia’s been getting some pretty hard knocks as of late. You’d pull out your Apple Pie 4th of July and your Fourth of July Mice and then scramble to find any books in stock about the Statue of Liberty. The saddest displays I’d ever make when I worked in the children’s room of my library were the 4th of July displays, no question. My one objection? Where are the recipes? One of those, please. Kim’s got a great style, so it’s nice to see her come out with another picture book. Using the old cumulative tale model found in poems like “The House That Jack Built”, I like what this book is laying down. The mix of different cultures and different types of food. How does a 21st century author or illustrator celebrate that day? As with the aforementioned Apple Cake, the solution seems to be to just concentrate on the good aspects. ![]() I think I have good reason to say that as Thanksgiving approaches every year I groan internally.
