Through a series of life events, she joined law enforcement, and a decade or so after she left, finds herself back in Painters Mill. Kate was born and raised Amish, but left the community at the age of 18. The protagonist, Kate Burkholder, is the chief of police in a small town in Amish country (i.e. Part of the pleasure in these books for me is their setting – right here in Ohio. It’s been a while since I just sat down and immersed myself in a series (especially a mystery series), but I am so glad that I did that with these books! I really enjoyed these mysteries a lot, and I’m excited because it appears that Castillo is still adding to the series, with #11 scheduled for publication this summer. Throughout, though, there are little gems like the quote above to make you smile.Īt one point, Lewis was an atheist, but over time through his intellectual inquiries and deductive reasoning became a Christian and wrote a series of spiritual books to help explain ( Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters, and The Great Divorce to name a few). She gave meticulous accounts of Brennan’s forensic investigations, details of which she sometimes culled from her own lab work. In Brennan, Reichs created a memorable protagonist whose professional life paralleled her own. She reworked the novel in the mid-1990s, salvaging only the main character, forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan, from the earlier manuscript. In the late 1980s Reichs wrote a novel, which was not published. Throughout her academic career, Reichs wrote numerous scholarly articles she also edited three books on physical and forensic anthropology.
